Mayor R.T. Rybak – Mayor, Minneapolis
R.T. Rybak has served as Mayor of Minneapolis since 2002. He has had led many efforts to make Minneapolis a greener, more sustainable and more vibrant city. His accomplishments include:
- Reducing the city’s energy consumption in order to combat climate change, including by being one of the first mayors in the United States to sign the Kyoto Protocol and the city is currently updating its Climate Action Plan.
- Implementing Thinc.GreenMSP an unprecedented economic-development partnership between business, organized labor, nonprofits and government to retain, grow and attract green-manufacturing businesses and jobs in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region.
- Installing the largest solar array in the upper Midwest on the city’s convention center;
- Installing green roofs on several city-owned buildings, including the only green roof on a sports and entertainment arena in the United States;
- Expanding the city’s fleet to include hybrid and electric vehicles;
- Championing efforts to increase biking, pedestrian and transit options, earning Minneapolis the title of #1 Bike City in America.
Mayor Rybak has also led the Homegrown Minneapolis initiative, which aims to bring healthy, local food options to all Minneapolis residents and school children, particularly those in underserved areas.
Mayor Rybak is also leading efforts to grow Minneapolis and its economy through job training and innovation, eliminate racial and geographic disparities in wealth and employment, and make sure that every young person in Minneapolis enters school ready to succeed and leaves school ready for college and career.
